Having left home to escape her mother’s violence and drug use, Lucy had also secured a restraining order against Theo’s father to protect herself and her baby. Her singular focus was building a better life for them both.
With her Nest worker as a steadfast guide, Lucy learned the skills of motherhood and independent living. Never having lived alone before, she received hands-on support in setting up utilities, budgeting, and maintaining her home. As Theo grew, her worker guided her through developmental milestones like introducing solids and ensuring timely vaccinations. In this safe, nurturing environment, Theo thrived.
As a proud Ngadju woman, Lucy also demonstrated her strength by caring for a friend’s baby girl for two months while the friend was away. She joined the Youth Futures Community School Hub in Clarkson, earning her Certificate II in General Education while building her physical and mental health through yoga and gym classes. Her dedication earned her the Positive Participation Award at graduation. Now living independently, Lucy is studying a Cert III in Allied Health Assistance at TAFE, working toward her dream of becoming a midwife.
