Sammie struggled with mainstream school as a teenager.

Rules, homework, and relationships with teachers and classmates felt impossible, and with no stable home or steady income, simply showing up to school was a daily challenge. Youth Futures changed the trajectory of her life.

Sammie spent approximately two and a half months at TINOCA, Youth Futures’ crisis accommodation, where kind youth workers suggested she explore Youth Futures Community School. Though she wasn’t ready immediately and her priorities were scattered, a stint at a Mercy Care hostel for seven months clarified what she needed: education to build a better future.

Youth Futures Community School became transformative. Sammie thrived with flexible pacing, manageable workloads, and youth workers who supported her every step—even lightening the mood with games of Uno. She completed her Certificate in General Education and gained confidence in job applications. Now sharing stable housing with a friend from school, Sammie is beginning a Cert III in Community Services at TAFE, with aspirations to become a youth worker and help young people like herself find their path.
