Tania’s life at 21 is one she loves, but her journey there was marked by tremendous hardship.

At 15, she was kicked out of home and cycled through hostels and friends’ couches. Without money, she turned to theft and became dependent on methamphetamine. Over the following years, Tania landed in juvenile detention 17 times for offenses like stealing and street drinking. Her lowest moment came when her mum visited her in detention, saw her track marks, and broke down—a moment that broke Tania’s heart as well.

After her release on bail, Tania made the pivotal decision to quit drugs. At 17, she moved into transitional housing with support from a Youth Futures Housing Support Worker. When she discovered she was pregnant, Youth Futures stepped in with tangible help—baby clothes, furniture, a fridge, and a washing machine. Seven days before her son was born, Tania had a home of her own.

Even when her house was robbed, Youth Futures support workers stood by her side, helping her rebuild and navigate the challenges of postnatal depression. They taught her how to face tough times with strength and resilience. Today, Tania has cut out negative influences, stayed out of trouble, and rebuilt her family relationships. Her son grows up surrounded by love and stability. Tania is now dreaming of university and envisioning a bright future for them both.
