Knowing she wanted better for her baby, she reached out to Youth Futures’ Nest program, a decision that transformed her life.
Yasmine came to Australia from Africa as a refugee at age eight with her mum and siblings. When her father joined them at 12, circumstances became volatile. His violence left Yasmine unprotected and in crisis by 13—she even attempted to take her own life. Child Protection Services placed her in a hostel at 14, where she was drawn into crowds that introduced her to drugs and alcohol. For years, she moved between hostels, couches, and the streets.
Her pregnancy became a turning point. At five months pregnant, Yasmine moved into a Nest property in January, where the support proved life-changing. With her Nest worker’s guidance, she learned to build a safe home and received help from a Drug Education Worker to stay on track as she welcomed her healthy baby boy. Yasmine poured her heart into creating a warm, welcoming home and worked to reconnect with her mum and sisters after five years of separation, hoping they’ll become part of her son’s life.
With Nest’s comprehensive support, Yasmine has now moved into her own house, ready to be the best mother she can be. She’s grateful for this fresh start and the opportunity to build a stable, loving life for her family.
