Leanne 18, and her boyfriend had been homeless for two years when they presented to Altone Youth Services. They came to the service for food and advice as they’d been sleeping rough, had stays in hotels provided by the Department of Communities and slept on various family members floors and couches. They had become parents and were desperate for a safe, long-term home for their young family. Leanne was understandably defeated and angry with all the moving around and not knowing where to go for help. With ongoing support and advocacy from out team at Altone she was placed on three housing wait lists. Whilst waiting, she regularly checked back at the Youth Centre as we case managed her family ensuring we could do everything we could to speed up the housing process and provide basic things like food, toiletries and a listening ear.
After 3 months Leanne was offered two properties in the same week! She thanked us profusely for the “help and support you have given me and for helping me to get my life back on track. I could not have done all this without you”. Leanne accepted a property and we helped her make it a home by providing some donated furniture. Leanne is about to re-enrol in education and will continue to keep us up to date with her progress.
We wish the young family every success.
