A Gift of Hope: How Your Support Lights Up Christmas for Young People
The festive season is often a time of warmth, connection, and reflection but for many young people experiencing homelessness, it can also be a time that amplifies feelings of isolation or loss. At Youth Futures, we see how the holidays can highlight what’s missing for young people without a stable home and often no family support.
This is where a simple act of kindness can make a real difference, turning a difficult time into a moment of hope.
Through our Brighter Futures, Brighter Christmas campaign, a small gift becomes a powerful message for a young person in our 24/7 supported accommodation programs. It tells them that they are seen, valued, and not alone.
More Than a Gift: A Feeling of Worth
When a young person arrives at our Djinda 24/7 supported accommodation service, they often have very little. A Christmas care pack provides immediate comfort, but its true value goes much deeper. For someone who may not have received a gift before, this gesture brings a sense of inclusion, recognition, and joy.
Danielle, a Case Worker at Djinda, reflects on this impact:
“The young people we work alongside are no different from anyone else; they deserve to experience joy and acknowledgment, particularly during the holiday season. Giving them a thoughtful gift can help convey appreciation and support, fostering a sense of being valued and cared for often in meaningful ways they may not have encountered previously.”
This small act of kindness can be transformative. It’s a quiet reminder that their community cares helping to build confidence and belonging.
Danielle also shares how anticipation is growing at Djinda as Christmas approaches:
“The excitement building at Djinda right now is beautiful. For many of the young people, it’s the first time they’ve experienced the positive side of Christmas. This process can really help shift the narrative around what the holiday season means to them.”
The Power of Choice and Community
A care pack can often be the first step in building trust and connection. It opens the door to further support and shows young people that support is available.
Giving them the power to choose their own items is especially meaningful.
“Giving them the ability to choose their own items is incredibly powerful. For many of them, this is one of the few times they’ve been given a real choice in their lives,” Danielle explains.
That choice restores a sense of dignity and control key elements of empowerment for young people rebuilding their lives.
Knowing that these gifts come from the wider community also has a profound impact. It shows that people genuinely care, even without knowing them personally. For young people, whose experiences of adults or services have often been difficult, this can be a turning point.
“It helps shed a positive light on who is out there and who cares,” Danielle says. “It’s a reminder that they are not alone.”
