Reimagining the Nest: Creating a Place Where Young Families Can Build Strong Foundations
For a young parent, “home” means so much more than four walls.
It’s where a baby takes their first steps.
Where routines are formed, confidence grows, and the future begins to feel more possible.
At Youth Futures, we know that the right environment can make a meaningful difference. That’s why we’re proud to share the next chapter of the Nest, our supported accommodation program for young parents, with several Nest properties now relocated to a complex designed with families, connection, and stability at its heart.
This isn’t just a move.
It’s a reimagining of what support can look like when we truly listen.
Why Location Matters
Young parents experiencing homelessness or unsafe housing are carrying more than just the weight of uncertainty. They’re navigating parenting, trauma, interrupted education, and financial stress, often all at once.
We’ve learned that where a young parent lives directly impacts how they’re able to stabilise and move forward.
When housing is unsafe, disconnected or isolating, survival becomes the priority. Long-term planning becomes much harder.
So we asked young parents what mattered most. Their answers were clear and practical:
-
Being close to schools and childcare
-
Easy access to public transport
-
Feeling safe, day and night
-
Connection to community services
-
Housing that feels family-appropriate, not temporary
We listened. And we acted.
A New Home Base for Young Families
With the support of Foundation Housing, a portion of our Nest properties have now relocated to a family-friendly complex better suited to the needs of young parents and children.
This new location offers more than convenience; it offers stability and opportunity.
Families now live closer to:
-
Schools and early learning centres
-
Reliable public transport
-
Community spaces that encourage connection
-
Safety features that support peace of mind
Alongside housing, young parents continue to receive wraparound, in-reach casework support, helping them build skills, confidence, and pathways toward long-term housing, education, and wellbeing.
From Instability to Stronger Foundations
The Nest has always been about more than accommodation; it’s about creating the conditions where young parents can regain stability and build toward independence.
In this new environment, we’re seeing encouraging signs:
-
Increased confidence in parenting roles
-
Stronger routines for children
-
Re-engagement with education, training, and employment
-
Young parents seeing themselves as capable decision-makers for their families
These early foundations matter, not just for parents, but for their children too.
Safe, stable housing supports children’s development, emotional security, and long-term outcomes. This is how change happens: steadily, intentionally, and with the right support in place.
Built Through Partnership
This milestone would not have been possible without collaboration.
We are deeply grateful to Foundation Housing for their partnership and commitment to supporting young families.
We also thank Big Yellow Mining, whose generous support through the Pipeline Challenge is helping Youth Futures strengthen housing pathways for young people across our community.
Looking Ahead
Demand for the Nest continues to grow, and Youth Futures remains committed to responding with empathy, quality, and purpose.
This relocation represents an important step forward, reinforcing our belief that young parents deserve housing and support designed for stability, dignity, and growth.
Because every young family deserves more than shelter.
They deserve the foundations to build a safe and hopeful future.
