At just 18 years old, Liam’s story is a powerful example of how support, resilience, and the courage to try something new can completely change a young person’s future.
As we celebrate Youth Week 2026 and this year’s theme, Strength in Our Stories, Liam’s journey highlights what is possible when young people are given the right environment to grow, learn, and succeed.
Feeling Stuck in Mainstream School
Before joining Youth Futures Community School, Liam felt lost.
“I was just messing around, not really doing any work. I kept getting sent out of class and felt like I wasn’t going anywhere.”
Like many young people, traditional school was not the right fit. He struggled to stay engaged, felt disconnected from learning, and could not see a clear path forward.
When he was referred to Youth Futures, he was unsure about taking the next step.
“I felt awkward. I didn’t know anyone. But I also felt like I had nothing to lose.”
That one decision became the turning point in his story.
A Supportive Learning Environment That Builds Confidence
Starting somewhere new can feel overwhelming, and Liam experienced that in his first few weeks.
He describes himself as quiet and unsure, often keeping to himself. What stood out to him straight away was how different the learning environment felt compared to mainstream school.
“It was at my own pace. There was no pressure. I could come back to my work after a break and it would still be there.”
This flexible approach to education, combined with smaller class sizes and one-on-one support, helped Liam feel more comfortable and capable.
“I could go in feeling relieved knowing any teacher or student would help.”
Overcoming Challenges and Building Connections
One of the biggest challenges Liam faced was feeling lonely.
For the first few weeks, he did not speak to anyone. Then he made a simple but powerful decision.
“I just thought, why not talk to the first person I see?”
That moment changed everything. It led to friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
“I don’t think I would be who I am now if I didn’t put myself out there.”
This is a clear example of the strength it takes to step outside your comfort zone.
Celebrating Milestones and Achievements
Throughout his time at Youth Futures Community School, Liam achieved milestones he once thought were out of reach.
He completed his certificate I in General Education, something he had never experienced before.
“I finally had something I could use. Before that, I didn’t have anything.”
With support from staff, he also applied for multiple jobs. After facing repeated rejection, he secured his first role at Hungry Jack’s.
“When I finally got the job, I felt really happy. Everyone else was happy for me too.”
These moments helped build his confidence and belief in himself.
Exploring Career Pathways and Finding Purpose
Liam was not sure what career he wanted at first, but Youth Futures helped him explore different options without pressure.
Through guidance, guest speakers, and hands-on opportunities, he was introduced to a range of pathways including community services and trade careers.
Eventually, he discovered plumbing.
“I thought I would give it a go, and I loved it.”
He went on to complete a pre-apprenticeship, gained valuable work experience, and successfully secured a full-time plumbing apprenticeship.
Gaining Independence and Life Skills
Liam’s growth extended beyond education and employment.
With the support of Youth Futures, he was able to:
- Gain his learner’s permit
- Access free driving lessons
- Get his driver’s licence
- Purchase his own car
“They always checked in on me. I never felt like just another person.”
These life skills played a key role in building his independence and confidence.
A Typical Day as an Apprentice
Today, Liam is thriving in his apprenticeship.
He wakes up at 5:10am each weekday, travels up to an hour to job sites, and works full-time in the plumbing industry.
“It’s a long day, but it’s 100 percent worth it. I love what I do.”
His routine reflects the discipline and motivation he has developed along the way.
Looking Ahead: Future Goals
Liam’s goals are clear and focused.
He plans to:
- Complete his apprenticeship
- Continue building his skills in the trade industry
- Start his own plumbing business in the future
“I don’t see myself doing anything else.”
Advice for Other Young People
When asked what advice he would give to other young people considering Youth Futures Community School, Liam’s response is simple and honest.
“Just do it. You can achieve whatever you want with the support there.”
He encourages others to take the chance, even if it feels uncomfortable at first.
“What’s the worst that’s going to happen?”
Strength in Our Stories

- Showing up each day
- Asking for help
- Trying again after setbacks
- Speaking to someone new
From feeling stuck and uncertain to building a future he is proud of, Liam’s story shows what is possible when young people are supported, valued, and given the opportunity to succeed.
